Yep...we're getting very close to that point with 3D printers...you can get one 
for $500 now <http://hackaday.com/2012/05/16/silidoodle-a-500-3d-printer/> and 
very high res ones (< .1mm)  based on DLP systems + UV lasers are popping 
up:<http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/b9creations/b9creator-a-high-resolution-3d-printer>

There are tons of plans and kits on the market for CNC routers from 
Dremel-powered ones to mill PCB's to monsters that will take 4x8 sheets of 
stock. I've even seen one modified to run a plasma cutter.
