I had a similar problem with a Dual 500MHZ G4 tower a few years back, and pulling the processors and cleaning the contacts is what did the trick. Amazing how much problems dust can cause... Now whenever I get a "new to me" computer, I pull it all apart and blast it with compressed air, and re-apply thermal compound after cleaning out the old goop.
