What does Console say when this happens? If hdiutil is throwing an error and 
giving up, it may be noted there instead of in Terminal. That would account for 
the files appearing and then disappearing. 

Also do 'man hdiutil' in a terminal window and confirm that all the parameters 
are correct...they look right, but you can't discount subtle changes in 
commands between OS X versions.
