Hi!

I’m thinking about upgrading my G4 Cube with a 128 GB SSD.

THE LONG STORY

It is very silent already because I’ve removed the /very/ /very/ /loud/
original 3.5″ HDD. I did this because I was also removing the broken optical
drive and decided to use the free space for a 2.5″ SATA HDD. I use a SATA to
IDE adapter from Digitus, so the SATA HDD is internally connected to the IDE
bus. Using the “lba-48” Open Firmware property I can use the full 500 GB
capacity, but I have to use a seperate partition for the space behind the 128
GB (respective 137 GB) line.

Compared to the original 3.5″ HDD, the 2.5″ HDD can hardly be heard.

Still, if I used a Solid State Disk (SSD) it would be completely noiseless.
This is something that fascinates me!

A few days ago I replaced the original 450 MHz 7400 PowerPC processor module
with a 533 MHz 7410 processor module from a Digital Audio. I had to adjust the
bus ratio setting on the module, so it now runs at 500 MHz. Since the 7410
uses less energy and is overall more efficient than the 7400 was, it is now as
cool as it was before, but with 50 MHz more speed.

The graphics card is surely the most necessitative part concerning heat. I use
a larger heat sink that I’ve taken from a (broken) newer GeForce card and
placed it on the GeForce 2MX AGP that I retrieved from a G4 Quicksilver.

Concerning memory: I’ve already maxed it out at 1.5 GB.

Overall, I have to say: working with the Cube on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger really is
fun! I like it so much that I dicided to use it more often!
(10.5 is a bit of a fun killer…)

I’m also thinking about resurrecting Mac OS 9, which should be rocking fast on
the Cube!

THE SHORT STORY &
THE QUESTION

Has anybody here experience with using a SSD on an OS that doesn’t know the
TRIM command?

Also, the TRIM command will propably not work, say, even under Linux, because
I’m almost certain the SATA to IDE converter/adapter will interfere.

BUT, I’m not that well versed in deep technical stuff like “wear levelling”,
“SATA Trim”, “Garbage Collection” and “Over-Provisioning”.

Anyone in the G-Group ever made such an upgrade?

Thanks in advance,
Andreas aka Mac User #330250
