Thanks for the responses everyone. I confirmed that the noise was coming from the CPU cooling fan.
I removed it, removed the label, applied about 5 small drops of 3-in-1 oil to the bearing and worked it in until the fan blades were able to move freely. I replaced the unit, and it is much, much quieter now (it sounded like a field of crickets before).
