Apart from resetting the PRAM, I could think of some other things--others may correct me: 1. Look for Display Preferences in User/Library/Preferences and delete the file (I don't know the name) or move it out of the folder I know, you already logged in as a different user; I'm just brainstorming... 2. Click the button "Detect Displays" in the System Preferences/Displays and see if that triggers the right reaction 3. As a last resort, Glen's suggestion to switch to Mirror mode would at least give you proper control.
What does the System Profiler (About this Mac, More info...) report in the Video/Displays section?
