hi all,

I can't get more than 14 Mbit from my 50 Mbit connection

Hi,

I don't really have any idea where your bottleneck is, but I can assure you it is nothing intrinsic in your computer....

---
Assuming that by "14 Mbit" we're talking 14 mega-bits per second...
that is 1.75 Megabytes / second.
50 Mbits/s would be about 6.25 MB/s
---

Point 1: This has nothing to with your OS or hardware capabilities.

I often use ethernet to transfer files from my linux laptop to my mac and have experienced much faster speeds:
transfer from:
        Linux Fedora on Thinkpad, builtin ethernet
through:
        Linksys 5 port hub
To:
        Powerbook 12" - built-in ethernet          ->           ~ 48
Mbits/second
        and later...
        G4 Quicksilver                                          ->
~80 Megabits/second

Each case the mac running OS-X 10.4.11, built-in ethernet, speed reported by Linux, ftp protocol. ( I am quite sure that the faster transfer to the desktop machine is a matter of the CPU speed, in my case, since the Powerbook's CPU gets maxed out during the transfer. )

Point 2: I think somebody might have been pulling your leg when reporting the Windows connection speed.

My connection type is mobile-broad-band (at 2.4 Mbits/s), so I got curious and decided to do some checking about wired connections...

-> fastest average internet connection speed in the U.S. is 10 Mbit/s.
<http://www.statetechmagazine.com/article/2013/02/average-internet- connection-speed-every-state-america>

-> U.S. average speed is 7.4 Mbits/s
<http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Average-US-Connection-Speed- Now-74-Mbps-123988>

-> Theoretical maximum cable speed is 30 Mbit/s
<http://compnetworking.about.com/od/internetaccessbestuses/f/ cablespeed.htm>

-> Typical maximum DSL speed if 20 Mbits/s
        <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_access>

What's the likelihood that you're getting 50 Mbits ?

... ( Unless you have a VDSL line or the like )

Point 3: Testing service...

Try other testing services too, such as <http://www.scanmyspeed.com/>.
[hey you never know, M.S. might have 'influenced' some of them].

By the way, I don't think you have mentioned thus far what your internet connection type is (Cable, DSL, etc.).

P.S.:
In the course of checking the connection speeds for my self, I was reminded why I use a mac...
The moment I started Internet Explorer on Windows 7, what does it do?
It tries to open msn.com and the computer chokes because it is trying to open a new window faster than I can click the close buttons, then even the "task manager" cant get enough CPU power to run, nor can it bring itself to the front to be useful.
I had to turn off the wifi and let it burn itself out !
