I originally posted this on the G-4 Powerbook forum, but as it appears not to have been updated in some time, I'm reposting it here in case it is an OS or G4 issue not specific to PowerBooks.

One of my PowerBooks (a PowerBook5,7) has a mysterious folder labeled "BaseSystem.pkg.159vQvGqc" containing a bunch of files with a ".plan" suffix. What are these files? Can they be deleted?

The other PowerBook (PowerBook 5,9) has two folders, labeled "Var" and "Tmp," but no "BaseSystem" folder. What is their purpose?

Both computers are running OS 10.5.8. All these folders are visible at the root level in the hard drive menu on each computer. Why are some folders visible on one but not the other?
