Hello Kevin, my G5 died in much the same way.  It turned out to be a fuse in 
the power supply.  Check the 5V standby in the power connector, also.  There 
are instructions if you search on the web. Basically, with all power connectors 
disconnected, short green wire with black with power supply plugged in and a 
regular 12V DC computer fan connected to DVD molex connector.

Repeat, search on web and youtube first.  Last year, there was still a web page 
for repairing these power supplies for around $85-100 in New York.  You can 
also ask for help from www.badcaps.net.
