A previous reply didn't get posted. Thanks Kris for the correct procedure for resetting the motherboard. I'd removed battery and AC cord and waited before pressing the CUDA, but hadn't removed the VRM. As for the power supply, I was following the Troubleshooting instructions in the service manual, but had not understood the pinout diagram. I read it as plug layout and and got no 5v trickle there; on MacForums it is suggested that the diagram is actually the pin layout on the motherboard and orientation would be reversed on the plug from the diagram. Somehow the problem had shifted from no boot to no shutdown without reboot. I began to wonder if the problem was coming from the ADB and the keyboard start button. Changed keyboard with ssame problem, but when I took the AppleVision 1710 display and its ADB connection away, all was good.
