The first two generations of iPod were Firewire only (both charge and sync). The 3rd generation iPod added the ability to sync over USB, but still needed FW to charge. This was the first version of the iPod to sport the 30-pin connector. The 4th and 5th along with the iPod Mini could charge and sync from either FW or USB. I'm not sure about the first couple of generations of the Nano. Subsequent iPods removed FW support. FYI, a FW charger is a great thing to have if you are ever trying to revive an older iPod which has sat for a *really* long time and has a totally flat battery.
