I’ve always used the keyboard viewer when putting the keys back on.

System Preferences - > Keyboard -> Keyboard Tab -> check Show Keyboard, Emoji & 
Symbol Viewers in menu bar 
Then menu bar -> keyboard menu -> Show Keyboard Viewer
