I'm not sure either. Can you see if a stock NetBSD-current install kernel 
changes anything? It's available at 
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/HEAD/200606080000Z/i386/installation/cdrom/boot.iso
 
(adjust the 200606080000Z if there's something newer available).

There's a difference between that kernel (== a INSTALL kernel that's close 
to a GENERIC kernel) and g4u 2.3alpha2 (== a pretty stock GENERIC.MPACPI 
kernel), but knowing if that makes a difference may help narrowing down 
the problem. (not that I'd like to disable the MP/ACPI code again, it 
seems to be needed for too many new machines :-/)
