Robert,

despite the comfort that the ftp transfer offers, I find a local cloning 
operation to be much faster. Assuming fast ethernet results in a 
theoretical maximum data rate of 12.5 megabytes per second, in reality 
often enough much less. Cloning runs at almost the max speed of the 
drives themselves, even on older hardware I can get 20-30 MB/s and more. 
Therefore, whenever possible do a local cloning. I equipped myself with 
a spare hard drive and an external power supply. This eliminates the 
problems with short internal power cables and just leaves the problem of 
pulling out a suitable data (IDE/SCSI/whatever) plug :)
