I've seen some familiar problems with my environment. What I had to do was typed ifconfig -a, and if it sees the network cards but without addresses, then the next step would be to assign the addresses themselves manually, then do the same to the gateway. Last step was to tell them the options of 100baseTX and so forth. After that I was able to see, connect to the ftp server, all these infos are on his site, pay attention to the part about why the network is so slow >5Mb connection. Hope that help.
