I have a brand new Dell Vostro 1000 laptop. It gets part way through a normal bootup and then appears to put the video controller into a bad mode. Sometimes when this happens the screen just goes blank. Other times it goes blank but with a few vertical lines of pixels illuminated. After a few seconds the CD rom drive quits spinning. It requires a power cycle to recover.
The screen fails in several slightly different ways, none of which seem to be repeatable. Are there any boot commands to force it into straight VGA mode or some other useful commands? At bootup I press a key for help but it gives me an unhelpful options menu with no explanation of what the options mean. I looked through the info on http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/ and did not find any further info on the boot options. When booting it goes to green text on black background, displays some text, pauses for perhaps 3 seconds, then the screen goes bad. During this waiting period the screen is OK except that sometimes the last line of text is missing quite a few characters, and some have been replaced with solid gray blocks. Other times there is no final text line after the "mainbus" line. The last few lines are: timecounter: Timecounters tick every 10.000 msec timecounter: Timecounter "i8254" frequency 1193182 hertz quality 100 BIOS32 rev. 0 found at 0xfdc84 pcibios_get_status: function not supported mainbus0 (root) r i up Hardware specs: Vostro 1000 AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 Dual-Core processor TK-53 (1.7GHz/512KB) [223-1152] LCD Panel 15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Anti-Glare Display [320-5633] Memory 1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 Dimm [311-7342] Video Card ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150 256MB HyperMemory™ (integrated) [320-5631] Hard Drive 120GB 5400RPM Hard Drive [341-4971] Optical Drive 8X DVD+/-RW w/Dbl-layer DVD+R Write Capability, Cyberlink Pwr DVD and Roxio [313-5391] Sound Card Integrated Audio [313-5383] Wireless Cards Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card [430-2485] Primary Battery 53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery [312-0569] Thanks! -------------------------------------- Peter Kuykendall _________________________________________________________________ You keep typing, we keep giving.
