Do the FTP settings on the FTP server impose an artificial limit on the size of a file? Some flavors of FTP do that by default and I think all of them can have the maximum transfer size adjusted. Check the configuration files. Also, check for any limitations being applied by a firewall on FTP transfers.
FTP is really painfully complicated.
