Summary: Text entry box shrinks to default size on window reopen

Initial Comment:
The text entry box in the GAIM interface in beta2-4
shrinks back to default size when a window is closed
and then opened. I've tried several different window
managers and the symptoms are thus:

kwin: After resizing box, the next time the window is
opened the window is smaller, and the space at the
bottom exactly equals the amount you resized the box.
If the window was maximised, it will cease to be
maximised on next open.

metacity: After resizing box, the next time the window
is opened, the window is smaller by the amount you
resized the box if and only if the window is not
maximised. If the window is maximised, it will no
longer be maximised on next open, but will still take
up all screen space (no space on bottom).

ion3: After resizing box, the box returns to default
size on next open.

It is important to note that the text box refuses to
retain any size I set under any WM. All these tests
were run in a KDE environment, simply switching WMs on
the fly.

This problem does not exist in Gaim 1.5 -- the box
retains the size I set it.

Has duplicate 1547548. Keeping this one because it has more comments.

Update: the patch no longer applies on beta 6, but changing line 458 in
gtk/gtkconv.c from "gtk_widget_set_size_request(gtkconv->lower_hbox, -1,
-1);" to "gtk_widget_set_size_request(gtkconv->lower_hbox, -1,
+
MAX(gaim_prefs_get_int("/gaim/gtk/conversations/im/entry_height"),
scale_height));", as per the patch, fixes the problem.

Confirmed the bug exists with beta 6. A while (three months) ago, a
developer sent me the attached patch, which fixes the problem for me. Just
making sure it's mentioned somewhere in the bug report. Patch is originally
from http://www.whatsbeef.net/wabz/arren.patch, the URL given to me by the
creator ("wabz" on IRC).

Regression testing shows that the first broken revision was revision
17316, which was committed between 15:30:00 and 16:00:00 on 2006-09-18 and
modified the files:

U gtk/gtkcellrendererexpander.c
U gtk/gtkconv.c
U gtk/gtkconv.h

Further testing shows that the textbox resizes to about 75 pixels in
height minus the toolbar for an AIM buddy icon, or 80px minus the toolbar
for an MSN icon.

A similar thing happens on Windows with beta5 - the text entry box is
always sized to the height of the buddy icon on opening a window, unless
"Show buddy icons" is disabled. I guess instead of enforcing a minimum
height depending on the buddy icon's height it is always resized to
exactly that height...

Further testing shows this only happens to windows displaying a buddy
icon.
