Category: None Group: None Status: Closed Resolution: Invalid Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Brian Cameron (yippi) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: GAIM libraries should be LGPL or not installed to /usr/lib Initial Comment: I notice that the libgaim-client.so and libgaim.so libraries are GPL'ed. It would be better if these libraries could be released under the LGPL license so that other programs can use these libraries. If these libraries really need to be GPL, could the libraries be moved to /usr/lib/gaim since, on Solaris, we have a rule that GPL'ed libraries cannot be shipped in /usr/lib. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Brian Cameron (yippi) Date: 2007-03-05 03:50 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=689771 Originator: YES I apologize I wasn't more clear about what I meant. Yes, I meant that it would be better if the libraries were LGPL because then programs with GPL-incompatible licenses could also use the libraries. In general, I think LGPL makes more sense for libraries unless the module maintainers are really wanting to restrict all users to GPL-compatible licenses. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Stu Tomlinson (nosnilmot) Date: 2007-03-02 14:39 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=309779 Originator: NO Then he should avoid blanket statements like "It would be better if these libraries could be released under the LGPL license so that other programs can use these libraries." (Non-GPLed programs can also use GPL libraries provided they are compatibly licensed.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Richard Laager (rlaager) Date: 2007-03-02 14:27 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=156487 Originator: NO I think he's referring to non-GPLed programs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Stu Tomlinson (nosnilmot) Date: 2007-03-02 13:19 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=309779 Originator: NO Nothing about the GPL prevents other programs using the libraries, why would it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Richard Laager (rlaager) Date: 2007-03-02 04:45 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=156487 Originator: NO No. If Solaris has such a rule, then the Solaris package of Gaim shouldn't put the libraries in /usr/lib. If there is no Solaris package of Gaim, there is no problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=100235&aid=1672184&group_id=235 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
