First with gaim2beta3.1 from the official ubuntu repo all the msn buddy-icons worked properly. Then to have support for buddy-icons in jabber I compiled gaim2beta6 with the standard configure, make, make install procedure, with ssl support for msn (--enable-gnutls=yes).
