Category: win32 Group: 2.0.0 beta 5 Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Alexander Kuzmin (kuzmos) Assigned to: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Summary: Windows Aspell memory leak Initial Comment: After launching, Gaim takes approx. 30 MB of memory according to task manager. After a short while, it jumps up to 60 MB, where it stays for a while. After that, it keeps constantly rising, after a whole day I've experienced 200-400 MB taken by Gaim(!!). I've tried different GTK themes, reinstalled the whole thing several times, turned on/off plugins, message notification, log... It keeps appearing on different WinXP PCs that all have SP2 + latest updates. It appears with different XP themes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Patrick (pv-patrick) Date: 2007-03-27 16:48 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1754723 Originator: NO Running 2.0.0b6 and I have Aspell turned off datallah and the memory still climbs. Currently at 228,500K and has been on for a few hours with only 1 conversation window open for aim. win32, winxp w/ sp2 So I don't think it has to do with Aspell, it's got to be something else that is leaking. I didn't notice such a huge problem with previous beta(s). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2007-01-11 11:16 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 Originator: NO hawkeyeaz1: that is going to be a different issue. Now that we've identified the issue, this bug is strictly related to the increase in memory when opening conversations with Aspell enabled. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: hawkeye (hawkeyeaz1) Date: 2007-01-11 10:49 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1310546 Originator: NO Update: With ASpell still disabled (and after a progam restart), Gaim has still gone up to 111Mb of memmory (one tab open). So it appears there is an additional issue lurking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: hawkeye (hawkeyeaz1) Date: 2007-01-10 15:17 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1310546 Originator: NO Likewise here. Time for a bug report for ASpell? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Alexander Kuzmin (kuzmos) Date: 2007-01-10 15:16 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1317619 Originator: YES ok, with spellcheck turned off and after gaim restart, i'm on 18 MB, yupi! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Alexander Kuzmin (kuzmos) Date: 2007-01-10 15:14 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1317619 Originator: YES yes, when i check and uncheck spellcheck option, memory drops / rises by approx. 80 MB per converstaion tab. without spellcheck, gaim takes 80 mb constantly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2007-01-08 06:38 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 Originator: NO kuzmos: Can you confirm that disabling spell checking prevents the excessive memory usage? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Marian Kyral (maros) Date: 2007-01-08 01:42 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=605901 Originator: NO You have right, but I was not able to find it :-( I've checked the whole preference dialog two times. Maybe a new spell checker option in conversation window menu is a good idea. And also easy switching between spell checker languages.... But never mind, if I can't use the spell checker I can uninstall it :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Glandos (glandos) Date: 2007-01-08 01:17 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1310579 Originator: NO Humm, the uninstallation is not needed :) You only have to uncheck the box in "Conversations" tab of Preferences dialog ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Marian Kyral (maros) Date: 2007-01-08 01:05 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=605901 Originator: NO Thanks glandos. I can confirm, the un-installation of aspell helps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Glandos (glandos) Date: 2007-01-08 00:29 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1310579 Originator: NO Hi everyone ! I think I should open a new bug report, but maybe I have to comment this bug first. I'm using Gaim both on Windows 2000 SP4 and Debian GNU/Linux Unstable. I've noticed that on Windows, Gaim used between 80 and 120 MB. Moreover, for each tab opened, Gaim used approximatively 20 MB (easy to see with Process Explorer when you open / close a tab), whatever the protocol used by the tab. But I found the solution... This was only caused by spell checking... Since I disabled it, Gaim don't use more than 20MB even with 10 tabs opened. There is no such problem on Debian, so I imagine it is linked to the way Gaim handles spell checking with Aspell on Windows platforms. Please tell me if I need to fill a new bug report with more detailed contents. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2006-12-20 08:35 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 Originator: NO It seems to only occur with certain versions of Windows. It isn't going to be something that gaim itself is doing, but rather something gtk+ related. I have no way to recreate it and try to debug it more, so I can't report a gtk+ bug for it. If someone can debug it further to narrow down where the memory is going, we can report it to the gtk+ folks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: matthewjw (matthewjw) Date: 2006-12-20 08:27 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1673294 Originator: NO So is there a conclusion to what causes this bug? Is there a way to fix it? I am experiencing this all too often and it's becoming more of a hassle each time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Alexander Kuzmin (kuzmos) Date: 2006-12-13 12:08 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1317619 Originator: YES I've turned off every account except for icq, gaim takes 60 MB. When I open a conversation window, memory goes up to 110MB!!! When the window is closed, it drops to 60 MB again. I have been considering for a while (please forgive me :) ) installing ICQ again, which takes around 30 MB with all of the bells and whistles of advertisement, skins and thousand plugins :( Quite sad... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: hawkeye (hawkeyeaz1) Date: 2006-12-07 14:22 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1310546 Originator: NO I am also noting this problem. I am running Gaim 2.0.0B5 on Windows XP Pro SP2, active plugins: Buddy State Notification, *History*, Release Notification, *Transparency*, WinGaim Options. I have 1 ICQ, 2 AIM, 2 MSN, 3 GTalk, 4 Yahoo logins (all low activity, typically 20-35 friends in list) active, and one window with two tabs open (yahoo and gtalk, neither have much activity). After fresh restart of Gaim, memory usage is at 35Mb. Previously with the same conditions, memory usage was over 120Mb. Another time with the same situation plus one icq chat tab open, the memory usage was 36 Mb, and upon closing the icq tab (which had next to no conversation in it or the history (spammer)), the memory usage went down to 24Mb. Next time mem usage goes up I'll try to run WinDbg and get some additional information. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Chris Pearson (kermitmn) Date: 2006-11-30 14:46 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1300177 Originator: NO previous comment.. on linux 2.6, kde, knoppix 4.0.2 2005-09-12 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Chris Pearson (kermitmn) Date: 2006-11-30 14:44 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1300177 Originator: NO I'm using 2.0.0beta5, and it leaks a lot as have previous versions. In about 40 irc chat rooms accross 10 windows it leaks about 100MB/day, none of which it lets stay swapped out for long, and which when it copies its entire memory footprint into a new process (why must it do this) will need twice that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Alexander Kuzmin (kuzmos) Date: 2006-11-27 15:17 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1317619 Originator: YES I am using localized Windows XP - with Czech translations. Bug does not appear on English (no Czech translations) XP, even if localedata are Czech. As for GIMP, it does not seem to leak memory (yet). I've tried some furious transformations on a picture and it is still 20MB for Gimp and 65MB for Gaim. I am using the same GTK as for Gaim - have downloaded gimp without GTK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2006-11-27 14:07 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 Originator: NO There has been another report of this; I believe that it is a Glib/GTK+ bug of sort. Can you test with GIMP (http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html) and see if you can replicate the memory usage issue? Are you using the localized Czech Windows XP or the "Regular" (i.e. English) version with Czech language group and locale installed? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Marian Kyral (maros) Date: 2006-11-27 13:53 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=605901 Originator: NO I have czech locale too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Alexander Kuzmin (kuzmos) Date: 2006-11-27 13:40 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1317619 Originator: YES For me it is Czech locale where the problem appears (3 machines tested). Speaking of which, I have english WinXP with SP2 and basically the same configuration and there the bug does not appear - gaim keeps at 25 MBs. Is it a problem of windows locale then? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2006-11-27 13:03 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 Originator: NO Which windows locale are you using? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Marian Kyral (maros) Date: 2006-11-27 06:03 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=605901 Originator: NO Hi, I have the same problem. Also on WinXP SP2. I have one ICQ and one MSN account configured. After Gaim start it uses between 8 and 16 MB of memory. When I'm opening new conversation window it takes a several seconds to open it. Then the memory usage is about 60 MB. Next opened conversation window uses another 60 MB. Actual situation: No chat window - Gaim uses 14 960 kB of memory. (after several hours of run) One chat window - Gaim uses 64 960 kB of memory. Two chat windows - Gaim uses 113 360 kB of memory. Three chat windows - Gaim uses 162 556 kB of memory. Fort chat windows - Gaim uses 205 252 kB of memory. Five chat windows - Gaim uses 250 148 kB of memory. When I close all chat windows, the memory usage is 15 168 kB. It is doesn't matter if open chat window for ICQ or MSN. The behavior is still the same. It is not new problem. First time, I saw it several betas ago, but I was not able to identify the conditions to reproduce it. Some times, Gaim works OK, some times is the memory usage going down after some time even there are conversation windows opened. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=100235&aid=1602148&group_id=235 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
