Category: core Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Kevin Verma (kevin_verma) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: gnome keyring support Initial Comment: This is to suggest use of gnome-keyring for account passwrod data. This seems very important missing feature. Else user comfort to save passwords becomes prone to accidental exposures. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Frederik (juliovega) Date: 2007-03-15 14:01 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1074504 Originator: NO You may not care about windows, but both the Windows and the Linux binaries are compiled from the SAME source code... So if the developers implemented a gnome-keyring support into the source, the windows users would not be able to use binaries compiled from this source any longer. Thus, there would have to be different source codes for Windows and Linux, making gaim OS-dependant. Gaim would have to split up into 2 projects: gaim-windows and gaim-linux. Maybe you don't know what this would mean for the developers who want to add new features for both Windows and Linux, but I guess they don't really want to maintain 2 more and more different source codes. The idea with the plugin is quite good, but I guess it there would be a problem, since the plugin would have to be loaded before gaim accesses the passwords (or while gaim tries to access them. I don't know much about writing gaim plugins, but I think they're usually loaded after everything else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Kevin Verma (kevin_verma) Date: 2007-03-15 02:24 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=725162 Originator: YES do I care for windows ? do I run linux-gaim binary on windows ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Richard Laager (rlaager) Date: 2007-03-14 23:55 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=156487 Originator: NO As a note to anyone looking to implement this: Hooks should be added to allow plugins to store the password data. Then, a gnome-keyring plugin for Gaim could be created. On systems without gnome-keyring, it could simply refuse to load or something. This wouldn't be useful to people who need compatibility with other operating systems, but for GNOME-only users, it could be useful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Frederik (juliovega) Date: 2007-03-14 23:38 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1074504 Originator: NO Wouldn't this make gaim OS-dependant? Since the gnome keyring is a Linux-only feature, what about the Windows users? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=350235&aid=1654492&group_id=235 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
