As it's rather disorienting when people refer to each other via the visible nicknames, but I can't see those nicks to figure out who they're talking to. You could use a "Nick (yimhandle):" text layout as well. (Which might come out with something like "SomePerson (myhandle): Hi!") Optional on/off using the nicks, of course. I never found nicknames for buddies in the main YIM client, just the chat section. Which seemed a bit strange to me.
