Summary: %n command is inconsistent
Initial Comment:
The %n command, when used in an AIM away message,
displays the screen name of any user who IMs you.
In Gaim, it will sometimes display the person's screen
name ("I love %n" becomes "I love gaimuser001") and
will sometimes display their alias ("I love John Smith").
Which doesn't seem like a huge thing until you consider
that most people will know that "I love gaimuser001" is
a special command, and will display anyone's screen
name... while "I love John Smith" means you're talking
about John Smith specifically.
Which can get you in trouble when you use the %n
command to jokingly threaten people with death... two
people actually thought I meant them.

it behaves according to clear rules: an "alias" is a gaim
concept, it doesn't translate to anything on any other
client or protocol, so there isn't a % command to return the
alias. instead, %n which returns the screenname on aim, is
used in the following manner.
when you go away, you send a copy of your away message to
the server, so when they right click and get your info, they
get that copy. that will always show the screenname, as the
server translates the %n in that case.
if they write you however, gaim sends the responce, not the
server. gaim will translate it to alias if any, if no alias,
remote nickname if any (only applies to msn, jabber, and
icq), then screenname (last resort).
this is the intended behavior, so i'm moving your request to
the rfe tracker.
