Im kinda of partial to the way the official AIM client handles the typing indicator: The indicator isnt an icon like in gaim, rather its a line of text: "<Screename> is typing..." for when someone is typing. "<Screename> has entered text." for when there is text entered and the user has stalled on typing for 5 seconds or more, or has started to backspace and delete characters.
