I was having the same problem, but can confirm shadow_striker's fix. Click the status bar and choose "New...", then click the plus-sign next to "Use a different status for some accounts". Click the check-box next to your account, and another window will come up. (You should notice that the "Status" box is blank inside.) Click "OK" on this, then "Use" on the Status window. Gaim will lock up for a few seconds, then crash.
