Just FYI, gaim 2.0.0 beta 3 and gtk 2.8.15 are still not
working--back to miranda for a bit longer...

This bug bit me, too, today (after upgrading Gimp to 2.2 and
the "recommended" GTK upgrade, GAIM = 2.0.0b2).

Version-specific dependencies on win32 should be a big "stop
sign" in the installer. Perhaps have a little checking
routine displaying an alert and exiting non-zero, when 2.8.x
is installed? This would be wrappable in the installer and
catch the problem in the beginning of the install.

For those who want to use GAIM and GIMP on the same Windows
machine, install GIMP using GTK 2.6, and then use portable
gaim, which includes its own distribution of GTK. It works
great on my Windows XP machine.

Machine: WinXP SP2+

I installed the "latest" GIMP, GhostScript, and GSview for
some page layout work I need to do - and I also need GAIM
to keep in contact with remote sites.

The "latest" GIMP/GS/GSV (as of 2/22/06) all have
dependencies on GTK+ 2.8.9.

I would very much like to be able to use both my page
layout tools, and GAIM.

Is there anything I can do to get these things happy?

Jim

I'm having the same problem.

Yahoo works (sometimes), but ICQ/AIM and MSN fail.

I find that Yahoo! works consistently for me with Gaim 1.5.0
GTK+ 2.8.9, but doesn't work at all with Gaim 2.0.0 Beta 2.

The same happened to me on a Windows 2000 Professional box
with GTK+ 2.8.9; AIM also failed to login for me.
Uninstalling GTK+ 2.8.9 and reverting to GTK+ 2.6.10
restored functionality (The GIMP users: I think GTK+ 2.6.10
will do fine for GIMP 2.2, not sure about GIMP 2.3).

Yahoo did work for me with GTK+ 2.8.9 but I only tried once
- therefore I can't really confirm whether it works only
intermittently, as reported by the bug opener, or not.

Note that on a Debian GNU/Linux box, the official Debian
gaim package from testing/unstable (which is a 1.5.1 CVS
dated 20051015) has worked flawlessly for me on both GTK+
2.8.9 and 2.8.10 (still official Debian packages). Thus,
this GTK+ bug may somehow be Windows-specific.

Same here - Installed gtk+ 2.8.9 on XP
tried both gaim 2.0beta1 and gaim 1.50:
2.0beta1 - msn and icq reports a server writing error
1.50 - msn does not connect, icq tries to connect and
fails after a while.

I just installed the latest GTK supplied on the GIMP for
Windows pages and now I'm running into the same issues. Is
there a workaround anyone knows of?

Many users of Gimp and Gaim complain about this. (See, for
example,
http://episteme.arstechnica.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/99609816/m/665008486731).

Is there a way to have multiple installs of GTK+ and force
Gaim to use one of them?
