Gaim crashes routinely every startup. It has been
happened starting version 1.4.

Nope, it runs happily.
Starting up JSPager segfaults gaim immediately.

Graphics setup is very usual, except virtual desktop manager
JSPager.
Resolution is 1024 by 768 by 32bit, Mobility Radeon 9000, no
graphics utilities used.

This is almost certainly a GTK+ bug.

It is very similar to another bug I've seen (and may
actually be the same thing).

I'm interested to know about your graphics setup - is there
anything "unusual" about your system? What resolution and
color depth are you using? Are you using some sort of
virtual desktop software?  Are you using any graphics utilities?
