I don't think the young people recognize these elements... probably they don't care about this. Look at Conversations, an XMPP CLIENT for Android where its icon doesn't have any of these elements that you spoke.

To be honest, it has nothing to do with Gajim, Jabber, or instant
messaging at all. The "G" could mean anything. The original logo
represents a person with Jabber logo, the light bulb, instead of his
head. It is recognizable and has relation to the product.
