Hi DJC, probably this hint is irrelevant for such an experienced person like you but anyway - this is the only suggestion I can think of, as I've had similar problems with the same before: If you use a program that runs the server directly on your machine and you are behind a router or are a part of a LAN in some other way, then make sure you have forwarded the necessary ports and configured the FTP server properly for passive mode access. Don't have enough time to try passive connection myself right now so can't see if it works here.
