I saved this quite some time ago, as you can see by the date. Here is a pretty good way to complete this mission. The subject line already told those who don't want it what this message contains, so delete now if you don't want it, or save it for your future reference.
Date: Friday, September 03, 2004 7:36 AM From: Michael.fontayne When you start the mission you are fairly far away from your objective. This is typically the point that I pop the top off the bottle. (Incidentally, pale ale is the brew of choice for LW.) Make your heading 25 degrees, kick up to full speed, and set the clock to triple time. Don't get too lazy or you'll run into land and have a bugger of a time getting back on course. Once you find the land keep turning to starboard so the land stays off the port beam. Remain about 4000 yards from land. Keep viewing. You're going to see another piece of land in a bit. This is when things get a bit more interesting, so pay closer attention. Start turning to port once you see the second piece of land. Once you are almost exactly between the two pieces you must be equidistant from both. Your heading should be about 10 degrees at this point. Keep an eye out, and make sure that one piece of land isn't growing closer more rapidly than the other. They are going to get close, so don't be too worried. Make your depth 10 feet. Raise the deck gun and aim it slightly to starboard with a range of 5000. You'll see the shore batteries when the coast is about 300 yards to either side. Stop immediately after seeing them. You've got your deck gun out, so let's waste those batteries for fun. Besides, it'll make things easier in the later sections. But mainly, I like to take them out because I tend to destroy every target I can. Now for the most dicey part of the game. Oh, but first. If a destroyer happens to show up while you're attacking the shore batteries go ahead and waste him too. He won't give you much trouble, as he's behind a wall. You can't hit him with torpedoes for the same reason, so nail him with the deck gun. Note that in later versions of the game this isn't possible. Okay, so as I was saying. Move forward at quarter speed for a few hundred yards. If you haven't seen the cave entrance before you'll see it now. Do a ping with your active sonar and see the minefields laid out for you. Sound scape (.P) will show that these mine fields are contiguous at this point, but we're going to prove that wrong. Continue forward, and begin your dive. I've played this one so much that I've started to play chicken with the cave roof, but don't recommend that to anyone who wants to actually complete the mission. Make your depth 72 feet. Make sure that your periscope is down. Start pinging away with that active sonar. Use the "m" key to get more detail about each ping. You should notice that there are three minefields. They are each separated by the smallest of spaces. The space to the left seems (at least to me) to be smaller. So you need to angle your boat for the right gap. set yourself up, and wait. This one's pretty hair raising, and takes a bit of practice. I can't give an exact heading because a lot depends on you're exact point in the bay. Once you're fairly secure in your heading take a look at the depth. The bottom is going to rise quickly. that's our next tight spot. Another Beer drinking wait either ends with an explosion, or with you squeezing through the minefields. So here's the trick. David G put the mines slightly in front of the cave roof, and the bottom is climbing quickly. So now that he's squeezed us left-to-right through a minefield he's going to squeeze us top-to-bottom. This is a bit of chicken-playing as well. You can't go up until you've passed the cave roof (keep active sonar going), but you can't go very far at 72 feet. The key is to wait for the bottom to reach 80 feet. Once that happens slowly start to bring the sub up. You'll find that you reach 60 feet just as the bottom is about to swoop up and scrape your keel. At that point you're past the roof, so let's come up to periscope depth. One last obstacle, and then we get to blaze away. The destroyer needs to be dealt with if you haven't already. so that we can get that heavy water plant, so do something to attract his attention. This is another tricky maneuver. You have literally no room to work with at this point, and no depth to run with. You've got to be a pretty great shot to knock that destroyer out, and you need to take it out if you are going to easily finish the game. Just remember that he has issues with maneuvering as well. So he'll try to keep to the deepest parts as well. If you move north from the cave you'll enter deeper water, which your sub loves! If you can get the destroyer you're ready to finish the mission. It's difficult to get a torpedo shot across the shoals near the plant, so rise up and your deck gun can play. It takes a ton of rounds, but at this point you have nothing but time. That's about the most difficult mission in the pack shipped with the game. If you can accomplish it almost every time you play then you're doing something right. Thanks go out to Randy Hammer for sending this great help. ------ Original Message ----- From: "John" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, September 25, 2006 7:37 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] lone wolf challenge > Nope, that's where I am having trubel.
