Hi John, The deckgun is a bit tricky, but all you need to do is raise or lower it to the right distance, and then point it at the correct ship and fire. Of course firing on non-moving targets works best, but I have used it effectively on moving targets as well. One comes to mind is the convoy you must destroy without hitting the hospital ships. I generally, aim in to the center of the convoy and start hammering them with the deckgun. You can often times damage or destroy a cargo ship or two and scare the hospital ships off so you can get some solid torpedo shots in.
