I had a similar problem playing the game on my mom's computer. If your sound card doesn't have the amount of memory that the game requires it will cause problems. A multichannel sound card works best for the game. As for why you can't jump the third pit, I'm not sure. There are only two steps to that one before you fall, I know that much. It ain't pretty when the pretty leaves you with no place to go.
