Firstly, I myself have about 60000 spread out through my two dwellings. All that gold, and nothing to spend it on. That's really the only answer for how I've saved so much. As for the Pumpkin Patch, I can help you. Think of the pumpking patch as a real pumpkin patch. Every time you find yourself in a battle with those vines, you're actually carving yourself some new pathways. Most of these are shortcuts back to the beginning in case you need them, but others you need to cut through to reach the end. So when you see those places where you can go two directions, think of where you have just come from and decide whether it's just a shortcut, or the path to the boss.
