Hi John, you can play AQ by simply installing it and during the installation, you'll be asked if you'd like to download the shareware version of Quake.
You can find the installation for the game at: http://agrip.org.uk or at: http://tbrn.net/modgirl in the AQ folder... Hope this helps...
