In Windows that's pretty standard yeah, JFW, Window-Eyes, NVDA and System Access all work that way. Honestly can't remember off the top of my head if that's true of VoiceOver or Orca, but honestly even if it's not, I think you'd be hard pushed to come up with a more universal solution than the one you've gone with man.
