Microsoft has some of the best web masters in the business and I am sure they'd be fired the minute they forgot something like that.Grin. No, actually how Microsoft renews their domains is they have an agreement with the registrar to automatically renew the domain when it is do and bill them for it automatically. Any company can go that route.
