I try to get the gold mined as quickly as possible while getting my population up. when I can, I build minor defenses to protect myself. Peasants fighting does not work. Then start searching if you can. find the gold mines and get as much as you can out of them as quickly as possible. Because the more you have the less they do. If your people get hurt heal them. easier to heal then to create new ones.
