Hello Cara:

Absolutely. If nothing else working in and around the open source
community it has taught me the value of good team work. How to have a
team from anywhere of one to a hundred working on the same project,
and the reason why things get done in the open source world comes down
to good tools, good documentation, and everyone coming together to do
what needs done. Even better none of this costs the developers
anything but a little time.

If there is a bug there are tools like Bugzilla which can track bugs,
and when a bug gets fixed whoever made the correction can update the
Bugzilla report
to reflect as being fixed in version x.x. That way the rest of the
members of the team can focus on other aspects of the project.

Having a repository where sounds, software, etc are stored such as
CVS, Subversion, or Git helps with version control. Every member of
the team can checkout the source, help debug it, add additional code,
test, etc which helps a team function as a team regardless if they are
in a dozen different countries and a dozen different time zones.
Everyone simply has access to everything else as needed.

Above all a team needs good team leadership. If Joe won't be able to
work on coding game x for the next two weeks but Bill has the time the
team lead should reassign Joe's portion of the work to Bill during
that period that way it gets done without delays.

I think, however, with this group Shaun is talking about they have no
experience working with a team and they are not properly assigning or
reassigning jobs as necessary. They aren't keeping up to date action
reports so everyone is aware of who is doing what, and they aren't
using any of the free tools out there that makes team development
possible. In short, they need to learn how to work together as a team
else they are doing things backwards from the get-go.

Cheers!
