If I remember rightly, when I tried it I finished up with barely any amo
left and ended up having to restore my game sinse I knew I wasn't going to
get further without.
It's really more an easter egg than a practical way of dealing with the dam
thing.

That's not entirely true. You can actually destroy it but it would take so
much ammo it's not worth the effort.
