Hi Lindsay, Well, as I feel the best part of the game is discovery I won't be giving away any spoilers just because I really do think you should discover some things for yourself. All the same here are a few tips to help make the game more enjoyable.
First, before entering a room or battling a monster etc make a mental note of what direction you are facing. A lot of times people get lost in that game is because they get into a scrape with a monster etc and end up going east instead of west because they were not paying attention to which way they were going before they encountered that monster. Second, if you are new to a level use the v key to find out if you have visited that location before. A lot of times people cover the same ground not knowing they were there before. Sometimes you do have to double back to a prior location to get to an intersection to get to the rest of the level so using control+v to set markers at those junctions is probably a good idea. I'm not sure how much use this would be to you, but make judicial use of the where am I command, w, which will speak your map coordinates. I often think of my current location in relation to the last one on the grid and am able to keep track of where I have been and how to get back there just by keeping close attention to major junctions, doorways, and other important things by memorizing there map coordinates. It has been a useful tool not only in Shades of Doom, but in games like Sarah which also has a fairly complex map layout. Finally, make use of your audio navigator. I believe it is control+n that will speak what's ahead. It will give you a detailed description of where doorways and intersecting corridors are. That way you can decide if you want to try the first turn on the left or the second etc. That kind of info is invaluable when you are just learning the levels for the first time or so. Cheers!
