Ah, I do see what you mean about game mechanism.
One interesting thing I've noticed abut audio games, is while the lack of a
wide display of information does create problems for action games, at the
same time it can be great for atmosphere, indeed a friend of mine who is a
fan of the graphical doom series said shades of doom from Gma games (which
is at least inspired by doom), was far more terrifying simply by virtue of
what you don't see. This likely also explains how audio dramas are becoming
very popular at the moment.
It's just a question of finding mechanics that can make the most of that.
