Hi Lori, The v key is for your periscope. The range of what you can see depends on both your depth and weather or not your periscope is up or down. Try raising your scope and then scanning with the v key. ' As far as mines such as mine fields they are a bit tricky to navigate around. What you want to do is use your periscope, IE the v key, to determine where the mine fields are and it will give you a range of port and starboard directions such as from 10 port to 10 starboard. That would mean the mine field was straight ahead of you. Ideally you want to give the mine field some clearance either to port or starboard so you can pass them by.
As far as mines detonating they won't explode unless you run into them. Once you get good at steering around them you can often be only a couple of yards away and they won't hurt you as long as you don't make contact with the mine/mines.
