In a lot of cases, even if you turn speech off for JAWS, you still have all the keyboard hooks digging into whatever application you're running, and they'll still interfere. That's why JAWS has a "sleep mode". I know there's a way to simply disable speech, but I don't remember it. It's been seven years since I last used JAWS, and any information I might pull out of my dusty brain might be outdated, anyhow. :)
