Usually, there's one key angry acorn that you can destroy in order to get the fertilizer. Don't destroy all your angry acorns in a level, or you'll drain all your power. You'll have to experiment. Try the level with a different acorn each time, and see if you get to grab the fertilizer.
No Fail Mode is helpful, and it's not a cheat. The only limitation with it is that you can't play the Munch Marathon bonus rounds with it on, because the object is to conserve as much flower power as you can.
