I don't remember if Stem Stumper is on Apple's Game Center, which is a social gaming service. This is probably why you're getting the prompt for your password. This is your Apple Account password, not your passcode to unlock your device screen. The decision to use Game Center is entirely up to you.
The setting for announcing alphanumeric cell labels is in settings. Again, you'll have to decide whether you need that information or whether it's distracting. Personally, I find it distracting and have turned it off, but you may think otherwise.
