Ah, ok. So, for the best effect, I need to have all my buildings close together. I usually have my production buildings in a group and my houses further away so I have room for either the residents or the official buildings to expand. Thanks.

They will return to the nearest storehouse, barracks, or guard tower. Once at that location, they choose a new enemy to attack.
