I had a very similar problem for some reason it seems to happen with some
soundcards. My only choice was to run it on another computer.

I finally got around to giving this game a try. The story and universe
definitely seem interesting. Unfortunately I ran into a problem almost
right off the bat. The problem is this. I’m getting none of the atmospheric
sounds I should be getting to tell me where stuff is, and that includes the
dark matter on the first level. I haven’t atuall died but nothing at all
happened. I’m running the game on a machine runing Vista home 32-bit.
