There are actually two jewels in the belltower, although one is hidden.

the jewels can be sold for a large amount of money.
The microphone item is an equipment item you can equip to one of your
manamon to increase it's stats, as I recall it increases the amount of
damage of sound based attacks.
If you hit n on an item, just like with a manamon, you can examin it for
what it does, which is often a good idea.
