You have to weaken the creatures you are wanting to capture before you throw the net. If you go to the option to view the attacking creature's stats, you can see how much health they have left by pressing 'h'. I usually try to get them down to less than 25% health before I capture them. The option to view their stats is the fourth in the list, first is attack, second is inventory, third is swap manamon, and forth is the option to view the attacking creature's stats.
For the stadium, you need to go to the NW part of town and go through the belltower. To get to the bell tower you need to cross through a house in the NW section of town. Once you go through the entire bell tower the stadium will open up.
